Basement Waterproofing with Epoxy Concrete Sealer

Basement Waterproofing with Epoxy Concrete Sealer, Basement Renovation

Homeowners can use a few types of concrete sealers to waterproof their basements. At NOVA Basement Finishing, we use Epoxy concrete sealer for our clients.

Epoxy Concrete Sealer Application

Benefits of Epoxy Concrete Sealer

The epoxy concrete sealer provides a long-lasting and high-durability solution to your basement waterproofing issue. Its thick protective film offers strong resistance against abrasions and chemicals. Additionally, it is excellent at repelling water. Epoxy sealers are typically used in high-foot-traffic areas such as basements, garages, and warehouses. Their lifespan is around 5-7 years. However, adding a Polyurethane top coat can boast an impressive 10-year life expectancy.

Epoxies are generally non-UV resistant. This can result in yellowing or fading if exposed to UV rays. For this reason, they are typically used in interior applications. However, premium Epoxies made with a UV-resistant additive are now available. Epoxy concrete sealer naturally comes clear, but you may add color pigment to better match your home.

Best Approach to Using Epoxy Concrete Sealer

Preparation is paramount in successfully applying and adhering to your Epoxy concrete sealer. Three things are necessary: cleaning, drying, and sanding.

First, carefully clean your surface, free from all dirt and dust. This will help optimize adhesion between the sealer and the surface. Often, a broom or vacuum is sufficient enough. More stubborn impurities may require scrubbing with soap and water.

Second, dry the surface as much as possible. It may be necessary to use a heat lamp or hot air gun to accelerate the drying process. Look out for condensation when working in an environment where the temperature changes.

Third, and non-porous surfaces. Sanding will create a good texture for the epoxy sealer to adhere to. Clear the surface of all dust after sanding.

Epoxy Sealer vs. Acrylic Sealer

Acrylic sealer is one of the most commonly used types of sealer. Generally used for lightweight projects, Acrylic sealer offers a basic level of protection. It is a cheaper alternative to the epoxy sealer. Although it is the more economical, the lower cost means it is less moisture intolerant and not as durable. Our team revere Epoxy concrete sealer as superior to Acrylic due to its longevity and sturdiness.
